Automatically save data

When you visit websites and enter logins, passwords, bank card details, or addresses in online forms, Kaspersky Password Manager prompts you to add them to the vault.

Sign in to websites

When you visit a website, Kaspersky Password Manager searches the vault for accounts that you have saved for that website. Depending on the search results, the application does one of the following:

  • If the vault contains one account for the website, Kaspersky Password Manager fills out the login and password fields.
  • If the vault contains several accounts for the website, Kaspersky Password Manager prompts you to choose the account that you want to sign in with.

If you have enabled automatic login and chosen a default account for the website, Kaspersky Password Manager will sign you in automatically.

Kaspersky Password Manager disables automatic login on websites containing two or more sign-in forms.

Open a website from the main application window

  1. Open the main application window.
  2. In the menu panel, click Accounts and then select Website / Email from the drop-down list.

The Websites / Email accounts section opens.

  3. Select a website to go to and click the "open in a browser" button .

The website opens in your default browser. If you have enabled automatic login and chosen a default account for this website, Kaspersky Password Manager will sign you in automatically. If you have disabled automatic login, Kaspersky Password Manager will automatically fill out the login and password fields with the default credentials for the website.

Automatically fill out addresses and bank card details

When you shop online, Kaspersky Password Manager searches the vault for bank cards and addresses to fill the shipping and payment fields. If the vault contains appropriate entries, Kaspersky Password Manager prompts you to choose the address or bank card that you want to use for the online form. If Kaspersky Password Manager finds data that can be entered into a field of an online form, the application displays the key icon next to the field.

You can disable autosave and autofill if you don't want Kaspersky Password Manager to fill out online forms for you.

Generate a strong password

Expand all | Collapse all

The security of your data largely depends on the strength of your password. A password is considered strong if it contains at least 16 characters, including uppercase and lowercase Latin letters, digits, and special characters. Kaspersky Password Manager generates unique and strong passwords. You can specify the password length and choose whether to include digits, letters and special characters. You can use Password Generator when you create a new website account or change your password for an existing account.

Generate a strong password

  1. Open the Password Generator window in one of the following ways:
    • In the main application window, click Password Generator.
    • In a browser window, click the application icon → the password generator icon .
    • In a password field on a website, hover over the field or click the key icon to invoke the Password Generator window.

The Password Generator window opens, and the application generates a password using the default settings.

  2. Change the password parameters if needed and press the circle arrows button to generate the password.

The application indicates if the password strength is medium or low.

  3. If you want to add passwords to the vault, turn on the Create an account when copying a password option. When this option is enabled and you copy a password, you will be prompted to create a new account with that password.
  4. If you want to save password generation parameters, select the Custom option on the Settings tab and specify the parameters you need. Your parameters will be saved even if you switch the tab or close the window.
  5. Click Copy.

The application copies the generated password to the clipboard. You can manually paste the password into the required field. If you use Password Generator to create a new website account or change your password for an existing account, the application automatically pastes the password into the required field.

Also, you can generate a strong and unique password while adding new Website / Email, App or Other.

  1. In the main application window, click Add, click Account, and choose Website / Email, App or Other.

    Entry window opens.

  2. In the Password field, click Generate.

The Password Generator window opens, and the application generates a password using the default settings.

  3. Specify password generation parameters if needed.
  4. Click Copy. The application automatically pastes the password into the required field.

Kaspersky Password Manager saves the last 5 generated passwords copied to the clipboard, in case you lose them. You can view your copied passwords in the Password Generator history. The application stores copied passwords on your computer and doesn't sync them across devices.

If your vault is unlocked, the Password Generator is available.

View the Password Generator history

  1. Open the Password Generator window.
  2. Click the Password history tab.

A list of your most recently copied passwords opens.

  3. If you want to copy a password to the clipboard, click the copy button Copy next to the password.

The password is copied to the clipboard.

  4. If you want to clear the Password Generator history, click Clear all.

Your copied passwords are deleted from the history.

Use Authenticator

Your ability to get one-time passwords is not limited to text messages. Kaspersky Password Manager can also generate and save one-time passwords to the vault. You can then use them for services with two-step authentication.

One-time passwords can be added only in the mobile version of Kaspersky Password Manager by scanning a QR code, manually, or by importing entries from Google Authenticator. When using services with two-step authentication, you need to enter the one-time password saved in Kaspersky Password Manager.

After adding a one-time password to the vault, it will be generated on any device where Kaspersky Password Manager is installed and connected to your My Kaspersky account. One-time passwords are generated automatically and never repeated, so you do not need to remember them.

To view the list of one-time passwords, click Authenticator in the main application window.

Before deleting a one-time password, make sure that you have disabled two-factor authentication for the account or set up another way to generate one-time passwords. Otherwise, you may lose access to the account protected by one-time passwords.

For more details, see the Online Help for mobile devices.

Check passwords security

Expand all | Collapse all

Your accounts are at greater risk if they have the same or weak passwords (for example, qwerty, 12345) or passwords based on information that can be easily guessed or obtained (for example, names of relatives or dates of birth).

With Kaspersky Password Manager, you can quickly find out how strong your passwords are and whether the same passwords are used for multiple accounts.

When you type a password in an online form for creating or changing a password, the Kaspersky Password Manager extension displays recommendations on how to create a strong password, including information about the strength of the password you are typing in.

Check for compromised passwords

For additional security, Kaspersky Password Manager can check whether your passwords have been hacked or leaked.

The application uses Secure Hash Algorithm 256 (SHA-256) to check for compromised passwords. The application generates SHA-256 message digests from each password in your vault and compares them with SHA-256 messages from a database of compromised passwords. If the SHA-256 messages match, the application warns you that your password is compromised and you better change it.

By default, the check for compromised passwords is enabled.

Kaspersky Password Manager check for compromised passwords only active entries.

Scan your computer for important documents

Kaspersky Password Manager helps save time and scans your device for files that may contain sensitive information. The application searches for JPEG, PNG, BMP and PDF files containing text. The files found during this search are analyzed and assign to categories: Passport (ID card), Driver License, and Bank Card. You can view the search results, choose which documents to add to your vault, and change the document categories.

Kaspersky Password Manager supports the following document categories:

  • Passports (ID cards)
  • Driver's Licenses
  • Bank Cards
  • Insurances
  • Contracts
  • Other

During the search, Kaspersky Password Manager skips PDF files larger than 20 MB, images larger than 100 MB, and images with resolution less than 256x256 px or higher than 40 MP.

What to do if you have forgotten the main password

For security reasons, Kaspersky Password Manager doesn't store the main password on any of your devices or in cloud storage. We recommend that you memorize your main password, or write it down and keep it in a secure place, because it can't be restored or recovered if forgotten.

If you forget your main password, you will no longer be able to access your data. In this case, you will have to create a new vault and protect it with a new main password. Then you will be able to add new data to the vault.

You can save a backup copy of your vault before deleting it. You can use it to restore your data if you remember your main password. When creating a backup copy of the vault, Kaspersky Password Manager exports entries to a file stored on your device. The backup copy is protected by the main password used when the backup copy was created. The backup copy is stored in encrypted form in EDB format. By default, Kaspersky Password Manager creates backup copies in %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Kaspersky Password Manager\Backup.

Create a new vault protected with a new main password

  1. In the The vault is locked. Enter your main password window, click Forgot your main password?

The Forgot your main password? window opens.

  2. Make sure that the Create a backup copy of your vault checkbox is selected.
  3. Click Create new vault to create a new vault. The Create the main password for your vault window opens.
  4. Enter and confirm the new main password. Click Done.
  5. Enter the verification code that was emailed to you and click Confirm.

Kaspersky Password Manager will save a backup copy of your old vault in the default folder, delete your old vault, and create a new vault.

Confirm dangerous actions

Kaspersky Password Manager provides additional protection by emailing a verification code to confirm potentially dangerous actions.

Actions that require additional confirmation:

  • Resetting the main password
  • Replacing a cloud database by a local one

If Kaspersky Password Manager is associated with a My Kaspersky account

In this scenario, you can confirm database cleanup by entering a verification code that will be emailed to you.

If data sync is turned off, you can only clean up the local database by entering your My Kaspersky account password on the Enter the password for your My Kaspersky account step. You also need to enter the security code from a text message if two-factor authentication is enabled.

You may get the "Password is incorrect" error if you use an account from a third-party provider that is not linked to a My Kaspersky account. Accounts from third-party providers are not allowed to perform dangerous actions like database cleanups.

To link an account from third-party provider to a My Kaspersky account, perform the following steps:

  1. Go to My Kaspersky:
    • By clicking the Forgot your password? link on the Enter the password for your My Kaspersky account step.
    • Or by using a direct link to My Kaspersky.
  2. Log in to My Kaspersky using the same third-party-provided account as in Kaspersky Password Manager.
  3. If you use an account from a third-party provider to sign in to My Kaspersky for the first time, you need to specify a region and accept the Terms of Use of the Web-Portal.
  4. Click the Set password button.
  5. Specify the My Kaspersky account credentials and click Save changes.
